When you choose not to use a mat border, your frame selection should make up for its absence. The narrow frame on the left may have worked well with a mat, but looks skimpy on its own. The frame in the center is a better proportion, but lacks the contrast and additional detail the mat would have provided. The frame on the right has a second ornate frame inside it, adding visual interest and creating better balance with the size of the photo.
