Staircases

Stairways and landings can be great places to display framed art. When the wall is visible from both the upper and lower levels, you get a lot of impact, too.

Placing Artwork

When placing artwork, it is common to center frames over the furniture sitting below them, but you do have other options. In this example, the two small pieces of art look more significant when pulled closer together. This positioning also helps unify the furniture grouping below.

People change from shorts and t-shirts in the summer to wearing sweaters and corduroys in the winter. The rooms of your home can get a seasonal change, too. Simply switch out a prominent piece of art and a couple key accessories.

Summer wedding season is here and bridal portraits are being framed. Brides today are different from their Mothers and the way their portraits are framed should be as unique as they are. When a newlywed comes in with her pictures and asks if you have some ideas other than the predictable "frilly frame", say "I do."

Mats on a framed canvas

Mats are not generally used when framing art on canvas, but here's an exception. A fabric mat was glued to a rigid backing. The oil painting has a frame immediately surrounding it. That frame is glued and screwed (from the back) to the mat and then a larger version of the first frame was placed around the outer edge of the mat. This is a great way to make a small picture larger to fill a wall space.

Consider the Size and Shape

When purchasing art and framing, consider the size and shape of the specific wall where the framed piece will be displayed. Notice how this tall vertical artwork relates to its space and builds a strong relationship with the room.

Frames Don't have to Match The Couch

Frames do not have to match the furniture. In this room darker frames were selected to balance with the darker tones in the art. The contrast from the wall also helps the art bcome a strong focal point on the wall.

Multiple Pieces

When looking for multiple pieces of art to fill a wall, many people focus on matching colors from one piece to the next. For a change of pace, the relationship can come from common subject matter or in this case its the common horizontal line flowing from left to right that unifies the set. With a common mat and frame, they look like they were made to go together.

"Featured Artist" Michael Kimble

My "FEATURED ARTIST" for the months of July and August is Michael Kimble, one of the truely tallented artist's I have ever met.

Michael Kimble is an accomplished painter, painting in the manner of the renaissance masters and influenced by contemporary techniques.

For me, the most powerful paintings tell some kind of story or invite the viewer to enter the painting. For portraits, if they are able to ask “How did the person get to this point in life, what are they thinking, and what might happen afterwards?” That is challenging for the portrait painter to accomplish. I think the landscape painter wants to invite the viewer into the painting. I like to be enticed to wonder what’s down this path, around those trees, in that forest, or in those mountains. It’s gotta make me want to go there.”

Yellow Frames

What should I do?

If you have a blank wall, there many options to enhance it with framed art. Choose a single piece in a large enough scale to balance with the room, the wall and the furniture OR create a unique grouping of art and even objects that are meaningful to you.
